What happens in a digital smile design consultation

Records

The records discussion should establish what the dentist has reviewed and what is still missing. Ask how photographs, scans or impressions relate to the examination. The useful output is an explanation of the proposed approach and its alternatives, with the unanswered clinical questions still visible. Ask who will assess the teeth and gums, then the bite and existing restorations. Explain your treatment goals and ask which information is still needed. A set of images does not replace that examination.

Planning discussion

Start the conversation with what you want to keep. Perhaps you like the shape of your front teeth but want to discuss their color, or you want a chipped edge assessed without making the whole smile more uniform. These are examples of preferences to explain, not recommendations for treatment. Bring reference images with a short description of the particular detail you like. Review the included teeth and their proposed shape. Discuss proportions and shade direction, alongside edge character and texture. Explain how those preferences relate to your face and untreated teeth.

Approval and limits

Finish by reviewing the decisions in your own words: which teeth are under discussion, what you want changed, what you want preserved and which choices await an examination or further review. Record any design revisions and ask who will explain them at the next stage. Approval of an appearance preference should not leave you uncertain about the treatment being proposed. Ask what guides fabrication and whether another review occurs before final bonding. Confirm which material and preparation choices remain provisional, together with the treatment sequence.

A design review still needs an individual examination

A preview cannot decide whether veneers or another approach are appropriate. Ask the dentist to connect the design to the condition of the teeth and gums, the bite, existing work and your goals. A visual preference is one part of a treatment decision.

The material name does not determine the design. Emax, another ceramic or composite resin still needs a case-specific shape, shade, thickness and workflow. Ask how the chosen material and any proposed preparation relate to the change you want.

Screens, lighting and software can affect how a preview appears. Material, underlying tooth color, preparation, laboratory work and clinical technique also matter to the final appearance. Ask which limitations are relevant to your own proposal rather than treating an image as an outcome promise.
