Material planning

Compare veneer materials

Start with the restoration proposed for each tooth and the material class. Then ask for brand or tier, laboratory name and location when involved, and written design and aftercare steps.

Use the guides to compare details. Mark what is named, what is missing, and what needs a direct answer from the dentist.

Guides prepare the conversation. A dentist must determine the restoration, material, and follow-up plan for teeth, bite, and smile goals. Related reading: no-prep veneer suitability; veneers and orthodontic treatment order; age and veneer suitability.

Patient questions

Common questions about veneers

Work through the questions patients ask about materials, treatment steps, bite and gum considerations, maintenance, and replacement. These answers are educational. A dentist who has examined you must determine your individual plan.

what are veneers

Veneers are thin restorations placed over the front surface of teeth. They may be made from porcelain or another ceramic, including Emax, or from tooth-colored composite resin. A dentist must examine the teeth, gums, bite, and goals before deciding whether veneers or another treatment is appropriate.

how do veneers work

Veneers change the visible front surface of selected teeth by adding a planned restoration. The dentist first evaluates the teeth and smile, then chooses the restoration, material, preparation, and bonding process for each tooth. The sequence differs for direct composite and laboratory-made ceramic veneers.

How are veneers done?

The process generally moves from consultation and examination to smile planning, any case-specific tooth preparation, impressions or digital records, fabrication when a lab-made ceramic is used, and final placement or bonding. Composite may follow a direct workflow instead. The exact sequence depends on the restoration, material, and individual case. See the veneers in Colombia guide for the broader planning process.

why do people get veneers

People may consider veneers to change visible tooth shape, proportion, color, spacing, or the appearance of selected chips and wear. Those goals do not establish candidacy. A dentist must identify the cause of the concern, check oral health and bite, and discuss alternatives before recommending treatment.

can veneers fix overbite

Veneers can change the visible shape of teeth, but they do not automatically correct the underlying jaw or bite relationship described as an overbite. A dentist or orthodontic professional must assess the bite and decide whether orthodontics, restorative treatment, another approach, or no treatment is appropriate.

what's the difference between veneers and crowns

A veneer covers the front surface of a tooth. A crown covers the tooth rather than only its front. The correct restoration depends on the individual tooth, its existing structure, the reason for treatment, and the dentist's examination, not on appearance goals alone.

what are no prep veneers

No-prep is a planning description, not a guarantee that every tooth can receive a veneer without alteration. Preparation needs vary by tooth position, shape, material, thickness, bite, and the intended result. Ask the dentist to document what will happen to each tooth before treatment.

how old do you have to be to get veneers

There is no responsible universal age answer. A dentist must consider oral development, tooth and gum health, bite, the reason for treatment, alternatives, consent, and the long-term implications of a restoration that may need future maintenance or replacement.

can you put veneers over crowns

A crown and a veneer are different restorations, and placing a veneer over an existing crown is not a standard shortcut. A dentist must identify what is already on each tooth, assess its condition and fit, and decide whether monitoring, repair, replacement, or another plan is appropriate.

can you get veneers with gum disease

Active gum disease needs professional evaluation and treatment before elective veneer planning. Gum health affects the treatment boundary, fit, appearance, cleaning, and follow-up. Only a dentist who has examined the patient can decide when or whether veneer treatment is appropriate.

who needs veneers

No one needs veneers based only on a photo or cosmetic preference. Veneers may be one option for selected appearance concerns, but a dentist must first assess the teeth, gums, bite, goals, and alternatives. The appropriate outcome may be veneers, another treatment, monitoring, or no treatment.

can you get veneers while pregnant

Necessary dental care and elective veneer treatment are different timing decisions. ACOG supports treating oral conditions that require care during pregnancy and separately advises postponing elective nonobstetric surgery until after delivery. Tell the dentist and obstetric professional about the pregnancy so they can decide what should proceed and what should wait.

are my veneers too big

A photograph cannot establish whether veneers are too large. A dentist should assess tooth proportions, lip movement, speech, bite, gum relationship, neighboring teeth, and the approved design. If new veneers feel wrong, affect the bite, or cause pain, contact the treating dentist promptly.

how often do veneers need to be replaced

Veneers do not have one guaranteed replacement schedule. Material, tooth condition, preparation, bonding, bite, habits, trauma, hygiene, and maintenance all matter. Regular examinations help a dentist decide whether a veneer should be monitored, repaired, or replaced.

do you need braces before veneers

Not automatically. Orthodontic treatment may be discussed when tooth position or bite cannot be responsibly addressed by changing only the visible tooth surface. A dentist and, when appropriate, an orthodontic professional should compare the options before any irreversible treatment.

do you need straight teeth for veneers

Teeth do not have to look perfectly straight before a veneer discussion, but position, crowding, rotation, bite, and available space affect what can be planned safely. A dentist must decide whether veneers, orthodontics, another option, or no treatment is appropriate.

can you finance veneers

Financing availability depends on the clinic, lender, applicant, country, terms, fees, and credit decision. Ask for the full financed amount, annual percentage rate where applicable, payment schedule, fees, cancellation terms, and what happens if the treatment plan changes. Colombia Smile Studio makes no approval promise in this answer.

what are veneers made out of

Veneers may be made from porcelain or another dental ceramic, including Emax, or from tooth-colored composite resin. The material name alone is not a complete plan. Ask for the restoration on each tooth, named brand or tier, laboratory when applicable, design process, and aftercare path.

can you get invisalign with veneers

Orthodontic aligner treatment and veneers may appear in the same overall plan, but the order and suitability are case-specific. Existing restorations, tooth movement, attachments, bite, retention, and the planned final tooth shapes need coordinated review by the treating professionals.

what type of dentist does veneers

Veneers should be planned and placed by a licensed dentist working within the applicable professional rules. Verify the treating dentist's identity, license, role, experience with the proposed restoration and material, design process, laboratory relationship when applicable, records, and follow-up responsibilities.

can you get braces with veneers

Orthodontic treatment may be possible with existing veneers, but attachments, forces, bonding, restoration condition, bite, and retention require individual review. The orthodontic professional and restorative dentist should coordinate the plan and explain risks to the restorations before treatment.

do veneers make your teeth bigger

Veneers add material to the visible tooth surface, but a well-planned result should not default to oversized teeth. Shape, thickness, preparation, lip movement, bite, neighboring teeth, and the approved smile design determine the result. Review the proposed design before treatment.

when were veneers invented

Early temporary ceramic veneer concepts are associated with dentist Charles Pincus in the 1930s. Modern bonded porcelain veneers developed later as adhesive materials and fabrication methods advanced. Today's veneer label still does not identify the proposed restoration, material, bonding system, design process, or laboratory workflow.

where to get veneers for chipped teeth

Start with an examination by a licensed dentist, not a destination or package search. A chipped tooth may call for smoothing, bonding, a veneer, a crown, another treatment, or monitoring depending on the tooth, damage, symptoms, bite, and remaining structure.

do veneers change your face

Veneers change selected visible tooth surfaces, so a smile can look different. They do not directly reshape the jaw or the entire face. Tooth proportions, lip support, speech, bite, and expression should be reviewed in the proposed smile design before treatment.

are veneers dentures

No. Veneers cover the front surface of existing teeth. Dentures replace missing teeth and surrounding structures. Because the treatments address different situations, a dentist must examine the mouth before determining which restoration, if any, is appropriate.

can you get veneers with receding gums

Receding gums require individual evaluation before veneer planning. The dentist needs to assess the cause, stability, exposed root surfaces, gum health, tooth position, bite, cleaning, and the visible treatment boundary. Gum treatment or another approach may need consideration first.

which veneers are the best

There is no best veneer material for every patient. The choice depends on the tooth-by-tooth restoration, tooth and gum condition, bite, goals, preparation, repairability, named material or tier such as Emax, laboratory when applicable, and aftercare plan. Design the smile first, then choose restorations around it.

can i wear a retainer with veneers

A retainer may still be part of a plan with veneers, but fit and timing need professional review. Do not force an old retainer over new restorations. Ask the dentist or orthodontic professional to assess the retainer, bite, tooth movement risk, and whether a new appliance is needed.

can i get veneers if i have fillings

Existing fillings do not create one automatic answer. A dentist must assess each filling, remaining tooth structure, decay risk, bonding surface, bite, symptoms, and the proposed restoration. The appropriate plan may differ from tooth to tooth.

can you smoke with veneers

Smoking does not become risk-free because veneers are present. It can affect oral and gum health, appearance, and the treatment environment. Discuss tobacco use honestly with the dentist and follow the individualized care plan. This answer does not predict an outcome for a particular restoration.

do veneers break easily

Veneers are not indestructible. Chipping, cracking, loosening, wear, or the need for replacement can occur, and risk varies with material, bonding, bite, habits, trauma, tooth condition, and care. Ask what repair or replacement would involve before treatment.

how are veneers made

Direct composite veneers are shaped from tooth-colored resin on the teeth. Laboratory-made ceramic veneers are designed from clinical records and fabricated outside the mouth before bonding. Ask for the exact material, named tier such as Emax when relevant, laboratory name and location, design approval steps, and remake terms.

how do you replace veneers

Replacement starts with an examination of the veneer, tooth, bond, bite, gums, and reason for failure or change. The dentist then decides whether repair, removal and replacement, another restoration, or monitoring is appropriate. The process and tooth preparation depend on the individual case.
