Opalescence PF

Opalescence PF is a dentist-dispensed whitening gel used in custom trays. Ultradent now uses the name Opalescence Custom in its U.S. branding. If you have an older pack or a quote using PF, confirm the exact gel, concentration and instructions with your dentist.

Our free guide focuses on veneers. Its clinic checklist and travel questions can also help you prepare for a dental consultation abroad.

    Understand the product

How Opalescence PF teeth whitening works

The gel is placed in trays made to fit your teeth. Carbamide peroxide is the whitening agent in this take-home system. The dentist selects a concentration and wear schedule, shows you how to load the trays and checks that they fit comfortably.

Opalescence PF teeth whitening involves both a product and a tray-fitting process. A refill syringe alone does not replace that assessment. If you already have trays, ask whether their fit and condition remain appropriate before ordering more gel. Orthodontic changes or recent dental work may change that discussion.

Ultradent's rebranding announcement identifies Opalescence Custom as the successor name to PF. Keep the original label when asking about replacements so the practice can confirm the correct product rather than relying on the name alone.

    Concentration changes the schedule

Different strengths carry different wear instructions. Learning how to use Opalescence PF starts with the concentration actually prescribed. Do not assume that a wear time remembered from an older syringe applies to a new supply, even when the packaging looks similar.

    Before you begin

From tray fitting to a home routine

    1. 01

      Check the treatment goal

Describe which teeth concern you and any prior whitening. A dentist should identify visible crowns or fillings and explain the possible mismatch after bleaching. Opalescence PF teeth whitening changes natural tooth color; it does not repair damage or alter tooth position.

    2. 02

      Practice loading and seating

Ask the practice to demonstrate how to use Opalescence PF with your own trays. The amount and placement of gel matter. Overfilling can push gel onto the gums. Keep the written instructions and make sure you know who to contact if the trays do not feel right.

    3. 03

      Review the response

Agree on when to review progress and comfort. A home course should have an endpoint or assessment plan. Do not move to stronger gel or extend wear because another person's photograph shows a lighter shade. Bring your trays and packaging if you need the dentist to troubleshoot a problem.

    Know what is included

    Trays, gel and refill costs

The first Opalescence PF quote may include an examination, custom trays and an initial gel supply. Later refills may cover gel alone. Ask the practice to separate these items so you understand the difference between starting treatment and maintaining an existing plan.

Check whether replacement trays, follow-up appointments or help with sensitivity are included. A cheap syringe listing does not establish authenticity, appropriate storage or suitability. This page gives planning questions rather than a clinic price, and it does not confirm the products stocked by Colombia Smile Studio.

    Questions to clarify

    Initial course
Are the examination, tray fitting and prescribed gel supply included?
    Refills
Which exact product and concentration should be ordered, and when is review needed?
    Tray replacement
What happens if a tray is lost, damaged or no longer fits?

If you already own a tray

Do not assume every clear dental appliance is a whitening tray. Ask the dentist whether your existing appliance can be used with the proposed gel. Opalescence PF instructions are part of a prescribed system, not permission to fill a retainer or aligner with any bleaching product.

    Comfort and expectations

    Keeping the course comfortable

Temporary sensitivity or irritated gums can occur with bleaching. Tell your dentist about symptoms before starting the course and ask how they want you to respond if discomfort develops. Do not compensate for missed wear by using more gel or doubling the next session.

Follow the storage and cleaning directions supplied with your gel and trays. Keep the syringe label and expiry date readable. If a tray changes shape or starts rubbing, stop treating fit as a minor inconvenience and ask the practice to assess it before continuing.

The ADA whitening guidance describes the main bleaching agents, common side effects and limits for restorations. For product selection, consult the manufacturer's whitening range with your dentist.

Color planning before new dental work

Discuss bleaching before choosing the shade of new bonding or veneers. Existing restorations do not lighten with natural teeth. If the main concern is a shape change, our composite bonding overview explains a different treatment goal.

Use the teeth whitening hub to understand the broader formats. Keep any maintenance plan tied to a dental review rather than a standing refill schedule.

    Patient questions

    Opalescence PF questions

Details to clarify before choosing a product or booking treatment.

Is PF now called Opalescence Custom?

Ultradent's U.S. rebranding announcement names Opalescence Custom as the successor to PF. Confirm the exact product on your local packaging and the instructions supplied by your dentist.

Can I choose a stronger gel myself?

Ask the prescribing dentist first. A different concentration changes the wear instructions and may affect comfort. A higher percentage does not establish that it is right for your teeth.

Does every concentration allow overnight wear?

No. Wear time is product-specific. Follow the schedule for your prescribed concentration rather than applying overnight advice from another version.

    Will it whiten my fillings?

No. Tooth-colored fillings and other restorations do not bleach like natural teeth. Your dentist can discuss whether the color difference may become more visible.

Can I get refills without another examination?

Ask the treating practice. They may need to review your teeth, symptoms or tray fit before advising further gel. This guide does not establish a refill prescription.
