Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening lightens natural teeth with a bleaching gel. You can choose an in-office treatment or a course of trays at home, depending on your teeth and the product. Start with the change you want, then understand what each approach involves.

Our free guide focuses on veneers. Its clinic checklist and travel questions can also help you prepare for a dental consultation abroad.

    How teeth whitening works

Whitening gels commonly use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to change tooth color. The formula, contact time and cause of discoloration influence the outcome. A stronger concentration does not automatically make a product the right choice for you.

Professional teeth whitening includes treatment in a dental office and dentist-supervised trays used at home. Custom trays are made to fit your teeth. Prefilled trays arrive with gel already in place and follow their own wear instructions.

The American Dental Association whitening overview explains these approaches. A dental examination identifies existing restorations and possible causes of discoloration before treatment begins.

What can change, and what stays the same?

Whitening changes color, not tooth shape or position. It cannot close a gap or repair a chipped edge. Existing veneers, crowns and tooth-colored fillings will not bleach like natural teeth, so their color may look different afterward. The ADA patient guide explains which teeth can respond. Read about whitening with existing veneers if your smile already includes restorations.

Show your dentist the teeth you want to lighten and explain your preferred shade. If one tooth has become darker than its neighbors, have the cause assessed before choosing a kit. A photograph can start that discussion, but it cannot establish a diagnosis.

Ways to approach professional teeth whitening

    1. 01

      In-office treatment

A dental professional applies the gel and protects the gums during the appointment. Some systems use a light and others do not. Ask which product is proposed, how the appointment works and whether the plan includes a take-home stage. A lamp alone does not identify the treatment.

    2. 02

      Take-home trays

A dentist may provide custom trays and gel, or recommend a prefilled system. Treatment takes place over a prescribed course. Follow the instructions for that exact product, including the amount of gel and wear time. Instructions for one concentration do not transfer to another.

    3. 03

      Consumer LED kits

These combine a whitening formula with a lighted mouthpiece. Check the active ingredient and application instructions before buying. An at-home LED device is a different product from a professional office system, even when both use light. Ask a dentist whether the kit suits your teeth.

    Know the product

    Teeth whitening brands and systems

A brand name can cover several different treatments. Opalescence Go and Opalescence Boost, for example, are used in different settings. Identify the exact system before looking at a price or deciding how it fits your schedule.

Professional teeth whitening systems and consumer kits appear in the directory below. Inclusion is educational and does not mean Colombia Smile Studio supplies every system. Confirm the proposed product and its availability during your consultation.

    Recognize the main options

    Opalescence Go
Prefilled disposable trays for whitening at home. Each tray contains gel, so there is no custom tray fabrication step.
    Opalescence PF
Take-home gel, now branded Opalescence Custom in the U.S., used with dentist-provided custom trays. The concentration determines the prescribed wear schedule.
    Opalescence Boost
An in-office system, now branded Opalescence Pro in the U.S., applied by a dental professional. The gel is chemically activated and does not require a whitening light.
    Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed
An in-office system pairing whitening gel with a dedicated LED lamp. Ask what the appointment and any follow-up include.
    Philips Zoom DayWhite and NiteWhite
Dentist-provided take-home gels for trays. These are separate from the WhiteSpeed office procedure and have product-specific instructions.
    KöR Whitening
A professional system with several treatment protocols. The dentist selects the appropriate take-home and, when indicated, office stages.
    Colgate Optic White ComfortFit
A consumer LED mouthpiece and whitening serum kit. Specify ComfortFit when researching it because Optic White covers other products too.
    SNOW
At-home LED kits used with whitening serum. Check the kit version and its instructions rather than assuming every SNOW product is identical.

    Product information

Read the individual guides: Opalescence Go, Opalescence PF, Opalescence Boost, Philips Zoom teeth whitening, Philips Zoom DayWhite and NiteWhite, Colgate Optic White LED whitening, SNOW teeth whitening, and KöR whitening. Check the manufacturers for current formats: Opalescence, Philips Zoom, KöR, Colgate and SNOW. Manufacturer shade claims describe particular protocols and are not a promise about your result.

    Understanding teeth whitening cost

Teeth whitening cost depends on the system and what the fee includes. Ask whether the quote covers the examination, trays and gel. Check the number of office sessions and whether follow-up or refills cost extra. A retail kit and a supervised course cover different services.

For care in Medellín, calculate the total teeth whitening cost with travel and accommodation included. Whitening alone may be easier to arrange close to home. If it is part of a wider dental plan, confirm the sequence before booking flights. Our travel information covers practical planning questions.

    Comfort and expectations

Plan for sensitivity and ongoing care

Temporary sensitivity and irritated gums can occur with teeth whitening. Tell your dentist about existing discomfort before starting. Ask what to do if symptoms develop, and avoid increasing wear time or combining systems on your own.

The NHS advises having the health of your teeth and gums checked first. Follow the prescribed course and contact your dentist about side effects that bother you. Persisting pain deserves assessment rather than another application of gel.

The NHS patient guide describes the examination and common side effects. Its service and regulatory information is specific to the UK. Your treating dentist should explain the product instructions and care arrangements that apply to your treatment.

How long will the result last?

Teeth whitening is not permanent. Future staining and your starting tooth color affect maintenance needs. Agree on when to review the shade and whether touch-ups are appropriate. Avoid buying refills on an automatic schedule without checking the instructions and how your teeth feel.

    Whitening before bonding or veneers

Discuss the final shade and treatment order before new restorations are made. Whitening natural teeth afterward can leave a mismatch with existing dental work. If you also want a shape change, explore composite bonding or veneers with a dentist rather than expecting bleaching to reshape a tooth.

    Patient questions

    Teeth whitening questions

What to clarify before choosing a system or booking an appointment.

Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?

No. A dentist should check the cause of discoloration and the health of your teeth and gums first. Existing restorations also affect the plan because they do not bleach like natural teeth. Share any history of sensitivity and the products you have already tried.

Will an LED kit give the same result as an office treatment?

Not necessarily. The formula and application protocol differ between products. A home mouthpiece does not turn a consumer kit into the office procedure advertised by a professional brand. Ask about the specific system and the evidence behind its claims.

Can I whiten crowns, veneers or bonding?

Bleaching does not lighten these materials like natural teeth. If a restoration looks darker, a dentist can assess surface staining and its condition. Avoid repeated whitening applications in an attempt to change the color of existing dental work.

How quickly can I finish treatment?

The schedule depends on the chosen product and your response. Some plans include an office appointment; others require a course of home applications or both. Confirm the full schedule, including a review, rather than planning around a headline treatment time.

Does Colombia Smile Studio offer all these brands?

This page explains the available treatment formats and named systems. It is not a list of confirmed clinic stock. Ask which product is available and clinically appropriate before paying for treatment or arranging travel.
